Configuring MARC Fields to be displayed/Indexed in Sirsi:

When logged in as admin, use the config toolbar:

Go into Cataloging Configuration:

Click on Catalog Format:

Select the Format you wish to make adjustments for: (any change in a fields display/indexing attributes must be made separately for each format one wishes to effect.  For example, to display and index 655, you need to make the same changes separately in MARC, MUSIC, SERIAL and VM formats.)

To adjust field display:

Under the Entries Tab, there are three sets, full, brief, and template.  Select the one you wish to modify, and click on the radio button to the right of it.

This gives you a list of all the policies.  Select again the one you wish to modify and click Modify:

All this is is a list of fields that display for this format and this display (FULL, BRIEF, TEMPLATE..)  Edit the list as you need and then click Save Changes:

Changes in Display take effect after the next Halt-And-Run.

To adjust field indexing:

For each Format you want to make the adjustment for, go to the Entries tab:

Scroll down to the list of specific MARC fields:

It helps to have a similar field to compare settings with the field you want to change.  Before proceeding, you might display that field and print all the tabs of its settings.

Click on the one you wish to index/un-index and click Modify:

Then go to the "Keyword" tab:

This is very complex, so you'll need to copy settings from a comparable field if you can, or carefully use Sirsi's contextual help (accessed by clicking on the menu for "Help" and then clicking on "Context") for this.  Generally, you are going to define two "variations", one for the specific field (allowing the user to search just for a value in that specific field) and then for the general category the field belongs to (subject, title, author etc.):

For each variations, you will need to enter the data, then click "Create" (or "Modify" to edit an existing value).  You will need to be sure to do this, because  "OK" will not save the new values.

When you are done entering "keyword variations", they should show up above on the "List of Keyword Variations":

You will then need to be sure to press "OK" on each screen until you are back on screen for Cataloging Configuration.  Your changes are not saved until you have done this:

When you're done with this, you'll need to go to the "hypertext" tab for the field and make sure that all the subfields you want to be searchable are included:

If you want the field to be hyperlinked (to be able click on it to see other such items), there are other changes you will need to make. "Entry type" will have to be modified on the First tab ("Basic").  Click on the Radio button to get options:

Check off "hyperlinked entry".  Leave anything else you have checked checked and click OK to finish:

To change which subfields of a field display, go to the Display tab for the field and click on the "display variation" (should only be one) and click "Modify".

Then you can set which fields display or do not display. ("a" is the main part of the field, and generally should always display).

When indexing a new field, you will also need to make sure the "index" policy is correctly configured.  You adjust this by going to "Keyword Index" from the Cataloging Configuration screen:

Go to the field/index you want to adjust, and click on "Modify"

Edit the values to what you want them to be and click "Save Changes.  Again, it is very helpful to have another field/index to compare values with here:
