Protecting Books That Have Dust Jackets
To protect the book and its labels, the dust cover (jacket) is laminated and reattached to the book with tape.
Before laminating can begin, all labels must be attached to the book, and all other processing should be completed.

When all processing has been completed, with the exception of lamination, the cover is detached from the book.

The cover is then brought to the laminating machine. Usually, multiple covers will be laminated at once to save time.

Laminator power is controlled by a red switch on the back of the unit.

The fast / slow switch should always be set to the fourth speed.
Important: The READY light above the film gauge must be green before you can run the laminator. The HEAT light should be blinking at all times. If it stops blinking, press STANDBY and wait seven minutes until heated. The laminator will power down automatically after three hours of no use.

When the cover and machine are ready, you must line up the cover before you can run the machine. Line it up so that there is equal plastic on either side of the book and so that the book is going in straight.

When you are running the machine, make sure that the cover does not get wrapped up in itself or folded over.

When the cover is ready to be laminated, press the RUN button.
The cover should be pulled through the machine automatically. Again, take care that the cover does not fold over itself while being laminated. This is especially likely to happen with the back flap of the dust jacket.

The machine puts the cover out in the back.

When the dust cover is completely out of the machine, you can use the cutting device to detach the cover from the machine.

When the cover is cut out of the machine, it retains some extra plastic on each side.

To cut this plastic, special scissors (made for plastic) are used.

On either side, the plastic should be cut off as close to the edge of the dust cover as possible. The plastic on the top and bottom should be left without being cut.

When cutting is complete, there should be almost no excess plastic on either side of the dust cover. The excess plastic on top and bottom should still be there.

The excess plastic should then be folded over on the inside part of the dust jacket and taped down on either side with double-sided tape. This forms a vertical line on either side of the book.

Once the dust jacket has been cut and folded and the tape has been applied, it is ready to be attached to the book. The book must be alligned so that the cover will fit over it correctly.

The first edge of the cover (either right or left depending on the orientation of the processor) should bes lined up so that it can be taped to the book.

The first side of the dust cover can now be attached to the book. The sides of the book and the dust cover should be lined up as precisely as possible and the dust cover should be applied so that it is straight.

Once the first side of the dust cover has been attached, the dust cover is wrapped around the book.

With the first side of the dust cover attached and the dust cover wrapped around the book, the dust cover should be checked to make sure that it is lined up correctly. The spine label should display properly.

The second side of the cover can now be attached to the book in the same fashion as the first side taking care that the dust cover is tightly attached, but that the book can still be opened.

When needed, thin, ribbed book tape should be used to help attach the dust cover to the book.

When used, the ribbed tape should be applied both on the bottom and top of the book cover on both sides.
