LCLS: CAP Manual: Serials: Serial Record Checklist

This checklist contains data that must be contained and displayed in every Serial record within the Symphony database:

• ISSN (022 Field).
• Full publication information (260 field) including date.
• Current frequency of publication (usually 310 field).
• Appropriate Subject tracings (6XX fields).
• Electronic Access information (856 field) where appropriate.  Only one such field per electronic address.
• Last three issues received displayed for every library (set up in the proper serial control for each).
• All Continues/Absorbed by information (78X fields).
• Item-level (item type and location) entries for every library that holds the title.
  • For libraries that only hold the serial as a Reference item:
    • Call Number: PERIODICAL
    • Item type: MAGAZIN-RE
    • LOCATION: PERIODICAL
• Textual Holdings for each library that holds the item (only one entry per library), reflecting clearly formats held (original format, microfilm, bound volumes etc.)
  • Textual holding can be no longer than 75 characters long (about 10 words).
  • Standard language for holdings (used where applicable):

    "Current [written number] years held in paper."

    e.g. "Current two years held in paper."

    "Current [written number] months held in paper."

    e.g. "Current five months held in paper."

    "Current [written number] issues held in paper."

    e.g. "Current six issues held in paper."

    Note:  ", circulating." added when issues circulate

    e.g. "Current issues held in paper, circulating."

          “Current issues retained until microfilm received."
